Outsole durability

We recommend a two-week gradual break-in for the Gaia. The contoured footbed may feel unusually supportive if you’re transitioning from flat sneakers — this is your foot adjusting to proper alignment. Wear the Gaia for two hours the first day, adding an hour daily until you reach full-day comfort. The engineered mesh will soften and conform to your foot shape after approximately 20 hours of wear.

Yes, the Gaia is designed to accommodate custom orthotics. The factory insole is completely removable, creating a 4mm cavity that fits most prescription orthotic devices without cramping the toe box. Simply lift out the existing insole and replace it with your custom footbed. The shoe’s structured heel counter and medial posting will still provide alignment benefits even with the factory insole removed.
The Gaia’s Contour Alignment Technology offers medical-grade arch support built into the midsole structure itself, rather than relying on a removable insert. The contoured footbed is biomechanically engineered with a 2.5-degree medial post and triple-density construction that extends through the entire sole unit. This provides more consistent, durable support than aftermarket insoles, which compress and lose effectiveness after 3-6 months of use.
The Gaia runs true to standard women’s US sizing with a medium-width fit. If you wear a size 8 in most athletic shoes, order a size 8 in the Gaia. The toe box is designed wider than the heel and midfoot to allow natural toe splay, so if you typically need wide-width shoes only because of toe crowding, the standard Gaia width may work for you. We recommend ordering your usual size for the first pair.
Under normal walking conditions — averaging 3-5 miles daily on pavement — the Gaia’s outsole lasts 500-600 miles before the heel and forefoot rubber show significant wear. The midsole maintains structural integrity for approximately the same distance. If you walk primarily indoors on smooth surfaces, you may see 700+ miles. The removable insole should be replaced every six months regardless of mileage to maintain optimal cushioning and hygiene.
The Gaia is specifically engineered to address the biomechanical causes of plantar fasciitis. We do not recommend machine-washing the Gaia. The agitation and water saturation can delaminate the bonded midsole layers and compromise the structural integrity of the alignment technology. Remove and hand-wash the insole separately in cool water, then air-dry both the shoe and insole at room temperature.
